UCC's Applied Social Studies Department to conduct major youth policy study
18.01.2008

Professor Fred Powell and Martin Geoghegan, Department of Applied Social Studies, UCC have recently been awarded €271,000 to carry out research in the area of youth, youth policy and youth work under the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS) Thematic Research Grant programme.
The project - Civil society, youth and youth policy in modern Ireland - has three main objectives: to analyse the development of social policy enacted specifically with young people in mind - 'youth policy' - from the formation of the state to the present day; to analyse active citizenship and associational activity in civil society as it relates to young people; and to survey the contemporary provision of youth services to young people.

The research will chart the changing nature, form and consequences of youth policy throughout the history of the state, and will culminate in a survey and analysis of contemporary youth policy and of the engagement with young people in civil society via 'youth work'.

The project begins in March 2008 and will run for three years.
