The Theory of Intelligent Design is Fatally Flawed! - Science Public Lecture
18.01.2008

Teleological arguments for the existence of God based on evidence of design in nature have a very long history.  The latest manifestation of this argument is simply called Intelligent Design (ID) and has attracted much attention, particularly in America.
ID claims to see, using scientific reasoning, the work of a super-intelligent Designer in the complexity of life and asserts that this complex 'design' cannot be explained by the theory of evolution through natural selection.  If true, this would be a major defeat for the theory of evolution, the lynch-pin that holds all of our scientific understanding of biology together.

In the next lecture of the Faculty of Science Public Lecture Series at UCC, Professor Reville, in his lecture titled "Intelligent Design", will demonstrate that the complexities of life can be explained by evolution, that ID arguments are fatally flawed and that ID itself is not science.  The Theory of Evolution still reigns supreme as an explanation of complexity in biology.

William Reville is Associate Professor of Biochemistry, Public Awareness of Science Officer and College Radiation Protection Officer at UCC.  He also writes the weekly science column Under the Microscope in The Irish Times.  He has written about 100 scientific papers and is author of the book Science Today: Understanding the Natural World (Irish Times Books, 1999).

The lecture takes place at UCC's Boole Lecture Theatre 4 at 8pm on Wednesday, January 23rd. Organised by Professor William Reville, Public Awareness of Science Officer and Faculty of Science, UCC, the highly popular lecture series, continues weekly until March 26th 2008. Admission is free, and as always, members of the public are invited to attend. See http://understandingscience.ucc.ie
