UCC to host 29th World Universities Debating Championships
18.07.2008

UCC is set to host the largest non-sporting student event in the world when the 29th World Universities Debating Championships take place at the end of this year.

Already, plans are well underway for Cork Worlds 2009 which will run from December 27th 2008 to January 4th 2009.  Hosted by UCC’s Philosophical & Law Societies, the Championships are expected to attract over 1000 delegates from more than 40 countries.

Delegates compete over an eight-day period to be crowned World Champions 2009.  The right to speak at the competition is limited to a select few from each institution, with speakers selected through tough internal competitions.

The World Championships are held annually in a University selected by the World Council.  Both societies first won the rights to host the Championships in January 2007, confirmed earlier this year by unanimous vote of the World Universities Debating Council, in Bangkok, Thailand.

Worth over €2million to the local economy, the Championsips will provide a welcome boost to conference tourism, to the Cork region as well as an excellent opportunity to promote Irish education abroad.

According to Mark Collins, Director of Registration & Communications: “It is a great source of pride for UCC to be hosting the 29th World Universities Debating Championships.  The event represents a unique opportunity not only for the Law and Philosophical Societies to showcase themselves on a world stage, but also for UCC, Cork and Ireland.  The Championships draws not only on the wealth of talent within UCC, but also on talent from the rest of Ireland, the UK, the US and even Thailand to ensure that the Championships are the best yet.”
