13.06.2008

Two student projects from MBS in Business Information Systems (BIS) from UCC have won the first and second awards for post graduate students at this year’s Enterprise Ireland’s 2008 Student Awards.
The 2008 Student Enterprise Awards are Ireland’s largest and most prestigious third-level student enterprise competition. 2008 marks the 25th anniversary of the Enterprise Ireland Student Enterprise Awards. The awards offer third level and postgraduate student teams from Ireland, the chance to realise their entrepreneurial ambitions.

Flytech won best postgraduate submission for its innovative financial trading execution system. Vital Technology Solutions was the runner up in this category for developing V-Sense™, a wireless sensor patient monitoring system designed to monitor patients’ vital signs in critical medical environments such as the Emergency Department (A&E) and the Intensive Care Unit. Vital used technology licensed from the Tyndall Research Institute, UCC. FlyTech’s trading execution system places trading spread strategies for Financial market traders buying and selling interest-rate futures electronically. These strategies allow the trader to spread risk and diversify effectively, while reducing trade cost and execution time. The system has been developed based on user needs and sits on top of Trading Technologies’ Xtrader electronic trading platform.

Flytech team members are Cian Hourihane, Aine O’Dwyer, Eoin Murnane, James Kaova and Donal O'Sullivan. Their industry mentor is Mary Byrne, Managing Director of Statistical Solutions.

The runner up, V-Sense™ records and monitors a patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, blood / oxygen level, and body temperature. V-Sense™ then sends this information to a central workstation to software designed by Vital Technology Solutions. The user can view ‘real-time’ information of the patient’s vital signs, as well as the patient’s personal details and their medical history.

The team are Michael O'Flynn, Liam Lynch, Daniel Jackson, Rian O’Brien, Gráinne O'Sullivan and Jamie O'Donoghue. Their industry mentor is Sean Murphy, Managing Director of Core Computing.
