UCC runs course for European Occupational Therapists
04.09.2008

UCC is hosting for the first time an Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS) course in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy.

41 occupational therapists from across Ireland, the UK and Italy are in attendance. During the course participants learn to administer and score a standardised assessment of a client's ability to carry out everyday living activities. The course is being facilitated by Professor Gill Chard from the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at UCC, and Ms Leslie Duran of Vancouver Island Health Authority, Canada.

The AMPS is a widely recognised outcome measure used by occupational therapists in over 25 countries. It can be used with clients aged three years right through to those in later life with any disorder that prevents full participation in everyday life. Its development now spans two decades, and has been supported by the American Occupational Therapy Foundation and Association and the National Institutes on Aging. AMPS courses have been offered in 18 countries around the world. The AMPS represents a revolutionary and very innovative approach to the problem of how occupational therapists conceptualize and assess function. It is different from any assessment encountered in the past, it is a valid, reliable, and sensitive assessment of occupational performance and is now available through UCC.

The course runs this week (September 1st-5th 2008).
