UCC hosts International Symposium in Malting, Brewing and Distilling

Over 120 delegates world-wide including the USA and Japan are expected at UCC next week (November 6th and 7th 2008) when the University hosts the first international symposium for young scientists and technologists in malting, brewing and distilling.

The symposium is aimed at PhD students and young professionals working in the field of malting, brewing and distilling, functional beverages as well as alternative fuels. The meeting will also facilitate the dissemination of research results and stimulate discussion about state-of-the-art topics in these areas. The Symposium is specifically designed to initiate networking among the young delegates who are the future of the malting, brewing and distilling community.

The programme will cover all aspects related to malting, brewing, distilling and alternative fuels. The specific sessions will deal with (i) raw materials and malting, (ii) alternative cereals, (iii) fermentation and flavour, (iv) beer and health, (v) quality assurance and (vi) environment and biofuels.  The symposium will also include presentations and field trips to the Cork breweries and Irish Distillers.

The symposium is organised by Professor Elke Arendt, Food & Nutritional Sciences, UCC, in co-operation with the Technical University of Munich and Institute of Brewing and Distilling.
