UCC Electrical Engineering student wins top international IEEE award
25.11.2008

Seán McSweeney, a PhD student in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, UCC has won a best student paper prize at the 2008 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) International Ultrasonics Symposium held in Beijing.
The IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium is the largest annual international conference on ultrasonics, and covers cutting-edge research in medical ultrasound, industrial applications, non-destructive evaluation (NDE), physical acoustics, microacoustics, and ultrasonic transducer design. Over 1,000 international researchers from Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan and China attended this year’s conference in Beijing earlier this month with nearly 700 papers presented at the event.

Seán’s prestigious award was for his paper titled “Improving the bandwidth of capacitive ultrasonic transducers using selective networks”, which described a novel technique using an electronic circuit to manipulate the output of an ultrasonic sensor, increase its frequency range, and to improve its efficiency. Seán also filed a patent related to his work before flying out to Beijing to defend his paper in front of a panel of international experts.

Seán was awarded an IRCSET Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship under the 2007 Embark Initiative, and is currently in the second year of his PhD in the Department of Electrical Engineering. His research is investigating high-power non-contact ultrasonic applications under the supervision of Dr Bill Wright.
