UCC Drama and Theatre Studies students present Howard Barker's "The Possibilities"
10.03.2008

First year students of UCC's Drama and Theatre Studies course present Howard Barker's The Possibilities at the Granary Theatre from March 12th-14th.
Set in a series of post-war landscapes, Barker confronts us with a variety of possible human reactions to extreme events. Thematically linked, these short playlets create a strong sense of connectedness through the range of archetypical characters presented. Whether it be the paranoid bookseller, unwilling to sell his books, or a peasant who rejects freedom, we find inherent in the scenes a structure of authority forcing the human being into most desperate situations. We are forced to confront our own categories of thought.  These immensely powerful and disturbing scenes reveal the terrible inhumanity of characters who strive to survive despite storms of irrationality.

Barker doesn't offer us solutions, there are no hidden messages longing for reinstatement; far more he offers us a foundation from which every individual might explore possibilities on how to reinvent the world.

Barker forces us to challenge theatrical timidity: he plunges us "into the guts and viscera of theatrical gestation" (Arguments For A Theatre). This play is unpredictable, violent, sexual and chaotic - and certainly not to be missed!

"Puzzle box of a show . . . chilling and sharp." Michael Scott Moore, SF Weekly.

Tickets €8/5 conc.  Box Office (021) 4904725.
