12.05.2008

Mr Zhipeng Ye, a third year PhD student in UCC's Department of Microelectronic Engineering, has been honoured by the Chinese Government as the most outstanding Chinese PhD student in Ireland.
Since 2003, the Chinese Government has recognized the academic achievements of Chinese nationals studying at prestigious universities abroad by making National Awards for Outstanding Self-financing Overseas Students. The 301 winners across the world in 2007 cover a wide range of subjects including arts, science, engineering, medicine, and commerce.

This year, seven students in Ireland won awards valued at $5,000 each.  Mr Ye, who holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Harbin Institute of Technology, China, and a Master of Engineering Science degree in Microelectronic Design from UCC, was ranked highest of these awardees.

During his studies under the supervision of Professor Peter Kennedy at Tyndall National Institute, Mr Ye has published two articles in leading international journals, he has presented his work at seven international conferences (at two of which he won prizes for his work), and has filed a patent on frequency synthesizers.

Mr Ye was selected by a committee of the China Scholarship Council comprising academicians of the Chinese Science Academy and invited experts from over ten research areas.  He was presented with the award by the Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, Mr Liu Biwei.
