UCC Celebrates Centenary
23.12.2008

This year (2008) marks the centenary of the establishment of University College Cork (UCC). Queen’s College Cork, the immediate predecessor of University College Cork, opened its doors in 1849 to 117 students.
The foundation of Queen’s University and its colleges at Belfast, Cork and Galway were historically, politically and socially significant. For the first time in over two hundred years, education was being made available to a cross section of Irish society. The Act establishing Queen’s College Cork (QCC) was passed in July 1845 and the Queen’s University of Ireland existed for 60 years until the establishment of the National University of Ireland and Queen’s University, Belfast in 1908.

In 1995, the 150th anniversary of the Colleges Act was recognised with various events and celebrations. The Irish Universities Act in 1908 established the federal National University of Ireland and its constituent colleges at Cork (UCC), Dublin, (UCD), Galway (UCG). The 1908 legislation gave a new name for the College, a new charter and new statutes.

A special exhibition to mark the occasion is currently on display in UCC’s Boole Library.

The exhibition, curated by Catriona Mulcahy, College Archivist, includes:
  • The first Governing Body Minute Book and first Academic Council Minutes
  • Images from the Letter Patent granting Charter to University College Cork, 1908.
  • Handwritten correspondence relating to the drafting of the legislation and the College statutes
  • Details of student statistics and images of student activities
  • A timeline of events from the very beginnings of the College in the 1840s to the present day
  • Photographs and documents relating to staff
  • Material relating to the development of the College from 1908 and beyond
  • A slideshow of images relating to the physical development of the campus using archival and modern photos
  • The UCC Mace which was commissioned in 1910.

Members of the public are welcome to view the exhibition which continues in the Boole Library until mid January 2009.  The Boole Library closes from December 24th 2008 until January 4th 2009 (inclusive).

Pictured viewing the Exhibition were:  Dr Michael Murphy, President, UCC; Dr Garret FitzGerald and Emeritus Professor John A. Murphy.
