UCC BA students study in China

Twelve BA Students of Chinese Studies began their one-year study in Shanghai University and South China Normal University in China in September. The group represents the first cohort of undergraduate students from UCC's Irish Institute of Chinese Studies.
Before the formal studies, the students went to Dali City for their summer camp from 18th to 28th August. Dali is a city in Yunnan province in the south of China, located on a fertile plateau between the Cangshan mountains to the west and Erhai lake to the east. The Dali University hosted the summer camp. In addition to taking Chinese language courses, the students had also been involved in other activities such as learning Chinese calligraphy and paintings, practising Tai chi each morning, making dumplings and experiencing Chinese tea culture. They also visited Chinese minority ethnic villages, local families and had a farewell party with students and teachers form Dali University.

The year in China is part of the BA in Chinese Studies Programme at UCC. Chinese Studies is one of the range of subjects of the BA degree in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences. After two years' study in UCC, the students study in China in their third year returning to UCC for the fourth year.

This year, 12 students are in Shanghai University in Shanghai and South Normal University in Guangzhou to complete their third year studies. By the end of the course, the students will have received intensive training in Chinese language, business, politics and culture. At the same time, they will continue their second subject studies in China. They will also be engaged in some community volunteering work such as helping the ageing groups, visiting schools and participating in some social activities in the local neighbourhoods.
