The Future of Higher Education to be addressed at NAIRTL Conference

Leading educationalists from Canada and the UK are expected at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) for a major two-day conference designed to inform debate on the future of higher education in Ireland and beyond.
The second annual conference of the National Academy for the Integration of Research and Teaching and Learning (NAIRTL) Teaching and Learning in Higher Education: Challenging Assumptions will take place on November 13th-14th at the Waterford Institute of Technology. With representation from almost every Higher Education Institution in Ireland and delegates from as far away as South Africa and Washington, USA, this promises to be a thought-provoking event with opportunities to meet delegates from a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives.

Professor Áine Hyland, Emeritus Professor of Education and former Vice-President of UCC and Martin O’Grady from the Network for Irish Educational Standards should provide debate and stimulation with a motion “Grade Inflation: Improved student grades in higher education are a valid reflection of improvements in teaching and learning.”

Further keynote speakers include Professor Erik Meyer, Director of the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Research in Higher Education at Durham University whose presentation will focus on “Helping our students: learning, metalearning, and threshold concepts.” Tom Haffie from the University of Western Ontario will invite participants to experience first-hand how personal response technology can be used to enhance student engagement.  

Professor Margaret Price, Director of ASKe, Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Oxford Brookes University will deliver a keynote presentation on the subject of  assessment as a learning experience. Shane Kelly, President of the Union of Students in Ireland, will be the student voice during the two-day conference. His address is titled “Understanding Student Feedback in the Quality Assurance Process”.

The conference also includes a wide range of papers, workshops and posters of interest to all teaching and learning professionals, as well as a post-conference field trip - ‘Teaching in the field’ - to the Copper Coast European Geopark, along the stunning coastline of County Waterford.
