Chair, International Advisory Board of Irish-African Partnership for Research and Capacity Building visits UCC
07.11.2008

The Irish-African Partnership for Research and Capacity Building (IAPRCB) is a three year pilot project bringing together all nine universities on the island of Ireland and four universities in Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda.
The project is a unique, high-level partnership aimed at developing a coordinated approach to research capacity building in higher education institutions to make an effective contribution to the reduction of poverty in those countries.

Dr Michael Murphy, President, UCC, met with Dick Spring, Chair of the IAPRCB International Advisory Board, earlier this week (November 3rd 2008) to discuss the Irish-African Partnership.

The Partnership is funded as a pilot project under the Programme of Strategic Cooperation between Irish Aid and Higher Education and Research Institutes (2007-2011). It is organised under the umbrella of Universities Ireland, which also provides some matching funding. Working with a network of key academics from partner institutions, the IAPRCB aims at building sustainable institutional capacity, both in Ireland and within partner countries, for research which is relevant and timely in meeting the development challenges facing partner African countries.

In tandem with the priorities of the Irish Aid development programme, particular focus is placed on building research capacity in the areas of health and education, with gender and information and communication technology (ICT) as cross-cutting themes.

The Irish-African Partnership is a network of people from thirteen partner universities. The Partner universities are as follows:
  • University of Malawi
  • Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (Mozambique)
  • Makerere University (Uganda)
  • University of Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania)
  • University of Dublin/Trinity College
  • Queen's University Belfast
  • Dublin City University
  • University of Limerick/Mary Immaculate College
  • University College Dublin
  • University of Ulster
  • National University of Ireland Galway
  • National University of Ireland Maynooth
  • University College Cork
The administrative leader of the Partnership is the Centre for Cross Border Studies, with offices in Armagh and at Dublin City University.

To date, a number of UCC staff have been involved in the Partnership: Dr Niamh Hourigan (Sociology & IAPRCB Steering Committee); Dr Paul Conway, (Education  & IAPRCB Steering Committee), Professor Denis Lucey (Food Business and Development), Dr Stephen Onakuse, Dr Anne Moore (Pharmacy), Dr Nick Chisholm (Food Business and Development), Dr Andrew Collins (General Practice), Professor Ivan Perry, (Epidemiology).
