STUDENT SUNDAYS at University College Cork
08.10.2008

The UCC campus is alive with activity this Sunday, October 12th 2008 as the university presents its very first STUDENT SUNDAY, a day packed with a whole range of events.

From orienteering to live music, comedians and exhibition tours, the campus will be brimming with activity all day long.

Following the success of the Freshers Fest, UCC continues to up the ante when it comes to the student experience. Vice-President Con O'Brien said:  "UCC is a seven day campus of academic and student life.  Academic life at weekends includes academic study in the Library and research activity in research laboratories.  In addition there is a thriving student life around sport, food, culture and student events."

The first Student Sunday on October 12th brings the campus alive with a diverse range of entertainments open to students and the wider community. Highlights include the Orienteering Club on campus which kicks off at 10am at the steps of the Student Centre continuing until 1pm. The Choral Society and Capriccio will perform in the Honan Amphitheatre from 1-3pm followed by the Live Music Society from 3-5pm.  Art Tours in the Glucksman Gallery run from 12 noon to 5pm. Traditional music fans are catered for with tin whistle classes in Áras na Mac Léinn at 2pm.  Comedy is also featured on the programme with the Comedy Society presenting some of Cork’s top comedians in Boole VI from 7-8pm. In addition, there will be various food options on campus.

Fiona Kearney, Director of the Glucksman Gallery, said she was delighted to see a lively programme of events on campus at weekends:  "The Glucksman is always open on Sunday but for this event, we will be offering special exhibition challenges to visitors and the café will have a brunch menu for the first time - it is a great opportunity to enjoy the campus and all it has to offer".

The STUDENT SUNDAYS initiative has been put together by a team of staff and students at UCC and will continue at regular intervals throughout the academic year.
