Research Awards for 15 UCC Staff

The National Academy for Integrating Research & Teaching & Learning (NAIRTL) has awarded its 2008 grants for research activities and projects which will advance the aims and objectives of NAIRTL.
Funding was available at either of two levels:
  • Small grants of up to €5,000
  • Larger grants of up to €20,000

Over 90 applications were received from members of staff at the NAIRTL partner institutions (UCC, CIT, NUIG, TCD and WIT); 29 of these were made by UCC staff members. Between individual and team applications more than 40 staff members from 30 separate departments in UCC participated in the scheme.

The selection committee comprised of five assessors from Ireland and the UK, and was chaired by Professor Grace Neville. The committee included nominees from the Irish Universities Association, Institutes of Technology Ireland, the Union of Students in Ireland, NAIRTL's management board and NAIRTL's International Advisory Board.

Nineteen funding awards were made in total, of which UCC received six. Congratulations to the following UCC teams and individuals who were successful in their applications:

Integrating Research, Teaching and Learning in a Multicultural Setting: Developing a FETAC level 6 Certificate in political issues and community action for the immigrant community (small grant)

Developing an Accounting and Finance Support Centre: Establishing and Disseminating Best Practice (small grant)

Dr Jacqui O'Riordan, Department of Applied Social Studies
Children and Global Diversity: Collaborative Development of Learning Materials: UCC and Hope Foundation (small grant)

Professor Kevin McCartney (UCC) and Ms Sarah Mulrooney (CIT), Cork Centre for Architectural Education
Literature Review and Development of Learning Workshop Exercises for Students Starting Research by Design (small grant)

Multiple Forum Education and Research: Enhancing Learning through Complimentary Temporal Environments, Research-Led Teaching, and Student-Based Enquiry (small grant)

From 2009 it is envisaged that this scheme will be open to all higher education institutions in the Republic of Ireland.
