New Part-time BSc Environmental Management Degree at UCC
31.07.2008

With increased demand for skilled Environmental Scientists in areas such as Industry, Education and Management, UCC is pleased to announce the introduction of a new Part-time BSc Environmental Management Honours Degree programme.
This exciting new course offers those in full-time employment the opportunity to gain a highly credited honours degree while studying on a part-time basis.

The aim of the programme is to provide an understanding of, and practical training in, all aspects of the environment that will be directly relevant to potential employers.  Employment prospects may be in the areas of environmental consultancy, industry, local authorities, agriculture & forestry, education, Government departments or the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Over 14 UCC departments are involved in this multi-disciplinary programme with topics ranging from chemical, biological, earth science and engineering aspects of the environment to social, economic, legal and health aspects. The four-year programme awards a Level 7 Diploma in Environmental Science at the end of the second year. Modules are taught using a combination of lectures, laboratory and field practicals, site visits and field excursions. Guest lecturers and site visits enable students to see how industry, local authorities and other organizations respond to environmental issues and take individual or collective responsibility for their actions.

Lectures commence on September 2nd 2008 running for three hours (7.00-10.00pm) each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, finishing in May with a short break at Christmas and Easter. Entry is open to mature students only. In this case, this means students, who reached 21 years of age on or before January 1st 2008. Application forms are available from Caroline Penny, Admissions Office, UCC (c.penny@ucc.ie).

An Open/Information evening on this new programme takes places on August 19th, 7.30pm, Enterprise Centre, UCC, Distillery Fields, North Mall Campus, Cork.  Further details can be obtained from the Programme Co-ordinator, Dr Merita O'Connell, email m.oconnell@ucc.ie
