Physics Postgraduate Wins Science for All Competition 2008

Suzanne McEndoo is the winner of the Science for All Postgraduate Public Presentation Competition for 2008. 

Suzanne, a postgraduate student with Dr Thomas Busch's Optoelectronics group, Physics Department, UCC, came first with her talk "Calculations with Quantum Whirlpools" which explained how quantum vortices created with ultra-cold atoms could be used to store information in quantum computers.

Suzanne was among five finalists who delivered excellent presentations last evening (April 2nd 2008) at the Final of the competition which aims to encourage young scientists to communicate the results of their research to the general public in an easily understandable manner. The large audience also heard presentations on topics such as controlling antibiotic-resistant bacteria, making medicines work faster, and the prevention of osteoporosis. Professor William Reville, Public Awareness of Science Officer, UCC, acted as MC on the night.
 
Suzanne now goes forward to represent UCC in the intervarsity ScienceSpeak competition organised by Irish Universities Promoting Science in the RDS on April 30th.

Chairing the panel of judges for the Final was Ms Jennie O'Sullivan, RTE Cork accompanied by Mr Lorcan O'Raghallaigh, Discover Science and Engineering, Forfas, Mr Dick Hogan, Acting Director, Office of Media and Communications, UCC and Dr Colman Casey, School of Pharmacy, UCC.  

The competition, jointly organised by the Faculty of Science and the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, UCC, is one of a number of initiatives organised under the general banner of Science for All.  This year's competition was sponsored by Discover Science and Engineering, the Tyndall Institute and Snap Printing.
