New Masters of Science (MSc) Programme in Obstetrics & Gynaecology
20.09.2008

A new postgraduate programme for senior house officers in obstetrics and gynaecology has started at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University College Cork.

This novel programme is the first of its kind in the country and is designed both to enhance the training experience for these doctors and to provide them with structured research opportunities. The MSc in Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a two-year cyclical part-time programme and clinical trainees will learn through a combination of small group teaching, clinical attachments and simulation teaching. Students will undertake practical exercises, present case studies and critically appraise journal articles, and perform clinical audit as well as undertaking research in the speciality.

Course Director, Dr Keelin O'Donoghue said: "This programme presents an exciting opportunity for recently qualified doctors to gain expertise in a supportive environment. It is aimed at those specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology but will equip students with skills in analysis, research and communication which they can apply throughout their professional career."

The programme is based at the new Cork University Maternity Hospital and is offered in conjunction with its affiliated hospitals in Melbourne, Limerick, Tralee, Clonmel and Waterford.
