New Facility for Early Childhood Studies, UCC launched at Cork City Primary School

UCC pioneered the recognition of the importance of childhood with the provision of the BA Degree in Early Childhood Studies in 1995.

As part of this programme, UCC, in partnership with St Vincent's Primary School, St Mary's Road, Cork have launched the new Professional Practice Rooms  and 'Early Years' Resource Centre in St Vincent's School.

The official launch of the facility on January 15th 2008 by Professor David Cox, Head of the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences in UCC will allow 300 undergraduate students to develop practice skills, using a variety of materials and equipment from the Highscope, Montessori, Steiner, Naíonra and Froebel methods of teaching young children. It will also include Microteaching and direct work with young children.

Speaking at the launch Professor Cox said: "Both UCC and St Vincent's Primary School are delighted with this initiative as it brings benefits to all. The School, the University and the Community will work in partnership to provide an enriched environment for young children. Professor Cox concluded his remarks by saying that "Early Childhood Studies is one of the 'Jewels in the Crown' in UCC. The formation of this partnership with St Vincent's Primary School represents another great step forward with future positive implications for the care and education of our most important youngest citizens".

Early Childhood Studies at UCC is a three year full-time programme leading to the BA Degree. The degree is taught by the Departments of Applied Psychology, Applied Social Studies, Education, Paediatrics and Child Health.
