28.11.2008

Micheál Martin, TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs will launch the Cork Worlds2009 World University Debating Championship on Monday next, December 1st 2008.
The Minister will unveil the winning trophy, a crystal replica of the Sam Maguire Trophy at Jury’s Hotel Cork. This trophy will be the focus for over 1000 participants from 41 countries, representing 176 of the world’s best third level institutions who will fly over 6.2 million miles collectively to participate in the Championships in Cork which run from December 27th 2008 to January 4th 2009.

Cork Worlds 2009, hosted by UCC, will be the 29th of the Championships, which were first held in 1981 in Glasgow. Previous host institutions include Princeton, Oxford and Assumption University, Thailand.  UCC hosted the Championships in 1996, winning the event in 1986 with the team of Brian Hassett & Siobháin Lankford.

The World Championships are held annually in a University selected by the World Council.  The Law and Philosophical Societies of UCC first won the rights to host the Championships in January 2007, confirmed earlier this year by unanimous vote of the World Universities Debating Council, in Bangkok, Thailand.

“The competition will bring in the region of €2 million to the local economy over its duration, providing a huge boost to Cork city and surrounding areas. Being selected to host the competition affirms the quality of UCC and the host societies, the Philosophical Society and the Law Society”, said Mark Collins, Director of Registration & Communications.
