The Maryborough House Hotel provides the venue on June 18th and 19th for the last event in the Discover Primary Science Awards roadshow which has appeared at 20 different venues in the last 2 weeks, including Dublin, Navan, Athlone, Sligo, Galway, Limerick and Waterford.
Discover Primary Science is a flagship project run by the national Discover Science & Engineering (DSE) awareness programme. The programme aims to develop creativity in children, show them how important science is to our everyday lives and more importantly how much fun it can be! Primary Schools (700 involved to date) and teachers who to participate in the Discover Primary Science project attend a hands-on teacher induction day, hosted throughout the country in Universities, Institutes of Technology, Colleges of Education and Education Centres. As part of these induction days, teachers carry out the activities (31 in all) set out in the classroom activity pack and then work through the activities with their pupils. The activities have been developed and tested extensively with teachers and are intended to support the teaching of science in the revised primary school curriculum.
The culmination of the project is the Awards Ceremonies which take place in the various venues. Local Discover Science and Engineering ‘partners’ are also invited to provide interactive and creative pods at each event. These displays reinforce the learning and educational aspect to the day, while providing fun, interactive displays that will spark the students’ interests and imagination.
UCC’s Faculty of Science attended Discover Primary Science Cork with a display that included the infamous Magic Planet and the popular crowd-pleaser “Mindball” game.
The Discovery Primary Science mascot Molly Cool was also in attendance at the Cork event along with special guest astronaut Dani Tan.
