UCC Seminar to examine financial exclusion and overindebtedness in Ireland
24.09.2007

"Issues in financial exclusion and overindebtedness in Ireland: Current and Recent Research" is the title of a one-day seminar being organised by the Centre for Co-operative Studies, UCC.
The seminar, funded by the Combat Poverty Agency, takes place in UCC's Aula Maxima on Tuesday, October 16th 2007.

The aim of the seminar is to raise awareness of the issues surrounding financial exclusion and over-indebtedness in Ireland and identify key areas for action and for further research, particularly in the context of increasing policy recognition. Dr Olive McCarthy of UCC's Centre for Co-operative Studies and Department of Food Business & Development explained: "In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in understanding and tackling the twin issues of financial exclusion and over-indebtedness in Ireland. This has led to a range of Irish studies being carried out on the issues."

The seminar will bring together key researchers in this area to disseminate their findings collectively and act as a forum within which issues in financial exclusion and over-indebtedness in Ireland can be explored and debated by researchers, policy-makers, regulators, financial service providers (including credit unions), social partners, organisations working to combat financial exclusion, and politicians.

Admission to the seminar is free and members of the public are welcome to attend.  To register: please notify Dr Olive McCarthy by 5pm, Thursday, October 11th  2007, so that a place can be reserved.  Telephone 021 4903354 or o.mccarthy@ucc.ie. Details of the conference programme are available on http://www.ucc.ie/en/ccs/CentreNewsEvents/
