Valerie Cummins, Director of the Coastal and Marine Resources Centre (CMRC), UCC and Professor Gavin Burnell, Director of the Aquaculture and Fisheries Development Centre (AFDC), UCC were this week (September 19th 2007) presented with a Beaufort award for research into an ecosystems approach to fisheries management.
The awards were presented to Jeremy Gault, representing the CMRC and Gavin Burnell (AFDC) by Mary Coughlan TD, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries & Food and Eamon Ryan TD Minister of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources at a ceremony in Dublin. Nearly €20 million worth of Government grants to fund new marine research projects in Ireland was announced with UCC researchers being successful in sharing awards of some €14.8 million. The awards, named after Irish hydrographer Francis Beaufort, will fund 141 researchers and students working in 5 research consortia, across 5 institutions.
The award for €3.9 million, of which €1.9 million will go to UCC, will see the development of an ecosystems approach to fisheries management by bringing together the diverse research expertise that is available across the island of Ireland. This new approach will look at how sustainable fish stocks can be assured whilst maintaining an ecosystem that can support a productive and robust stock.
The project will involve collaborative linkages with the Marine Institute in Galway and with Queen’s University Belfast. The UCC groups will bring their expertise in the study of marine mammals, applied fisheries ecology and management, marine governance and data management and geomatics to the project allowing the development of an improved approach to fisheries management.
