Through a generous donation from Schering-Plough (Brinny) Co., the research laboratory of the Clinical Practice Group in UCC's School of Pharmacy has been equipped. The equipment includes two HPLC systems and ancillary support materials and equipment.
Undergraduate training:
Providing a range of competencies and skills to undergraduate pharmacists
Postgraduate training and research at both Masters and PhD levels:
Novel agents/drugs will be analysed for their development potential
Ongoing testing of metabolites of existing drug moieties
Collaborative research with Cork/Limerick teaching hospitals:
Enhancing the links already established with Mercy University Hospital, Cork University Hospital, South Infirmary, Victoria University Hospital and St Johns Hospital Limerick
At a ceremony today (June 25th 2007) to mark the handover of the
equipment to The School of Pharmacy, Mr John Howell, General Manager,
Schering Plough (Brinny) Co. commented: "We are very proud of this
association with UCC and believe that it is very important to foster
and strengthen the links between the Pharmaceutical/Biopharmaceutical
industries and third level institutions. Ireland's future success in
this key sector will depend on partnership developments such as this.
We are very happy that this equipment will be used for teaching, drug
development and testing purposes as our industry depends on both
graduates and innovative new products."
Speaking on behalf of UCC, Professor Julia Kennedy, Professor of
Clinical Practice said: "It is particularly significant that this event
is occurring just after our first Pharmacy Graduates were conferred
last week. These graduates are now commencing their pre-reg programme
and in addition to community pharmacy and hospital placements some have
opted for industrial placement and others for further research. This
laboratory will be critical to our future teaching and research
programmes and strengthen our existing links with our partner
hospitals. We are very grateful to Schering-Plough who has provided us
with this opportunity to translate our goals into high quality teaching
and research initiatives."
