€50m Investment To Create 170 new jobs in Tyndall National Institute
29.06.2007

The Tyndall National Institute, Ireland's largest Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Research Centre, is to create 170 additional research positions as a result of a €50 million expansion programme.
The investment at the Institute's facilities at its Lee Maltings location in Cork will create a landmark complex of some c 170,000 sq. ft. including a new laboratories building and a substantial upgrading of the existing infrastructure. Dedicated space for industry researchers and a new incubation facility to provide appropriate accommodation and support to start-up companies in the ICT area are also incorporated.

Tyndall has a current employment level of 330 researchers (including almost 100 PhD students) and is a significant employer in the area. The new investment programme will allow the Institute to significantly increase its researcher numbers to 500 within the next four years, at which point (2011) Tyndall will be generating over €40m of research income annually.

Tyndall is one of Europe's leading research centres, specialising in hardware for ICT. It was established in 2004 (as an initiative of University College Cork (UCC), the Department of Enterprise Trade & Employment (DETE) and Science Foundation Ireland) bringing together researchers from the NMRC, UCC and CIT. This has established a critical mass of researchers with a particular emphasis on quality, accomplishment, post-graduate education & training and the delivery to Ireland of value from research.

Tyndall undertakes collaborative research and related work for some of the world's leading ICT companies including Intel, Analog Devices and Hewlett Packard, as well as providing vital support to Irish high-tech companies.

The mission of the Tyndall National Institute is to be a focal point for ICT hardware and networking research in Ireland, with an approach to R&D that covers the full range 'from atoms-to-systems', and a strong drive 'to deliver value from research'.  Current activities are focussed on the key research areas of photonics, micro-nanoelectronics and microsystems, and include photonic and electronic materials, nanoscience and nanotechnology, device modelling, design, processing, fabrication, testing and packaging, optical, electronic and biological subsystems and systems for photonic networks. The Institute's National Access Programme provides fully funded access to its facilities and expertise to researchers from all Universities and Institutes of Technology on the island of Ireland.

Funding for the development project is primarily provided by Science Foundation Ireland, following an agreement between the Department of Enterprise Trade & Employment and UCC. Additional contributory funding comes from the Higher Education Authority's Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI).

The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Micheál Martin, TD welcomed Tyndall's announced commitment towards increasing the number of PhD students studying on-site from 70 in 2006 to 140 in 2011 and increasing the number of world-class Lead Principal Investigators from 17 in 2005 to 35 in 2011. Commenting on Tyndall's plans, the Minister indicated that  "this increase in Principal Investigator and PhD numbers is an important step forward towards achieving the goals set out in the Government's Strategy for Science Technology and Innovation which has the aim of doubling our PhD numbers and ensuring Ireland will be internationally renowned for the excellence of our research by 2013."

In supporting the increase in world-class teams at Tyndall, Minister Martin commended Tyndall's efforts in moving Ireland up the ICT value chain from component manufacturing, through sub-systems assembly to full systems-level design and manufacture. He suggested that "there is a strong imperative to increase the added-value in Irish manufactured goods, through the inclusion of additional capability, via a higher intellectual content at the design, development and manufacturing stages and the Tyndall Strategic plan is designed around servicing these requirements."
