Dr Dennis Hopkinson

Congratulations to Dr Dennis Hopkinson a UCC GEM 2015 graduate who has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Scholarship to research and teach at the University of Rwanda College of Medicine and Health Sciences. A brilliant achievement!

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program allows college professors and professionals from various fields to perform research and/or teaching at host institutions throughout the world. The award consists of a stipend and provides support for enabling the research and teaching that the award recipient has designed.

Dennis will perform research and teach at the University of Rwanda College of Medicine and Health Sciences and at the college's primary teaching hospital, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Kigali (CHUK).  The two research projects which Dennis has designed are, care of the medical patient as he or she transitions from presentation at the emergency department to arrival on the medicine ward -- these patients are often neglected once the decision to admit has been made and they have the potential to decline rapidly; his second project focuses on antihypertensive medication adherence -- as the burden of communicable disease has declined over the last decade, noncommunicable diseases have become more prominent and adherence to medication has proven difficult. Dennis will also teach the “Clerkship in Internal Medicine” course and the preclinical course "The Cardiovascular System." Finally, Dennis will serve on the curriculum committee, and plan to teach music at a local music school.

UCC GEM programme is very proud of our successful graduates.
