Presenter: Stephan Naji (Head of Recovery Unit, Commonwealth War Graves Commission)

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) is dedicated to commemorating the 1.7 million service personnel who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars. In response to an increasing number of battlefield discoveries since 2010, the Recovery Unit (RU) has undergone significant professionalization. A structured rapid response protocol has been established, along with dedicated resources and public outreach initiatives aimed at encouraging the reporting of new findings while minimizing disturbances to sites of historical significance.

Since 2022, the RU has recovered over 100 sets of remains annually, employing forensic archaeology methods to carefully assess each case, document contexts with precision, and preserve critical evidence. While the primary mission of the CWGC is commemorative, the RU adheres to field protocols that align with legal standards and support judicial cooperation to assist Member Governments in their identification processes. By integrating systematic desktop research, standardized site assessments, historical records, and GIS technology, the unit enhances the efficiency of its recovery efforts and aims to improve identification rates to honor the fallen.

This presentation will showcase key recovery operations and identification efforts for Commonwealth casualties from both world wars, highlighting recent initiatives to foster international collaboration in the search for missing soldiers.
