Our Wellbeing, Inclusion, Diversity and Equality Commitment
Our commitment to Wellbeing, Inclusion, Diversity and Equality (WIDE) is underpinned by a clear framework of governance, accountability and continuous improvement. The Terms of Reference and remit of our WIDE committee, linked below, define the responsibilities, priorities and strategic objectives that guide our work in creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
Purpose of WIDE Committee
The WIDE Committee supports the University's commitment to creating a fair, inclusive and supportive environment for staff and students. It provides a forum for identifying priorities, monitoring progress and promoting actions that advance wellbeing, equality, diversity and inclusion within our School.
Terms of Reference
The remit of the School Wellbeing, Inclusion, Diversity and Equality (WIDE) Committee is to advise and assist the Head of School in the leadership and management of all WIDE issues in the School. Its specific responsibility is to advise and assist the Head of School and the School Management Team (SMT) in the fulfilment of WIDE aspects of the School Strategic Plan.
The committee is chaired by a staff member appointed by the Head of School and includes representatives from academic, administrative, technical and research staff, together with student representatives. Members are normally appointed for three-year terms, with staggered appointments to ensure continuity. The Committee appoints a Deputy Chair, and leadership transitions are managed to support smooth succession. Membership reflects a balance of gender, career stage, roles and backgrounds, in line with Advance HE guidance. Named alternates may attend by agreement of the Committee, and additional colleagues from across the School, University or affiliated research units may be invited to meetings to provide expertise and advice on specific agenda items.
The terms of reference of the WIDE committee can be viewed on this link FNS WIDE Terms of Reference
Reports
The Committee reports to SMT with Committee activities included as a standing agenda item at SMT meetings. The Chair also reports on the Committee's activities to the School Assembly and both SEFS and UCC EDI committees. The Committee, in common with all School Committees, produces an annual report each September.
Meetings
The Committee meets twice per semester. To facilitate information sharing, the meeting minutes are shared directly with FNS staff.
The Committee terms of reference are reviewed at 3 yearly intervals.
WIDE Membership
Our WIDE Committee brings together staff and student representatives from across the School, reflecting a diverse range of experiences, perspectives and expertise. Through their collective commitment, members help champion wellbeing, inclusion, diversity and equality, ensuring these values are embedded throughout our community.
