Audiology

MSc in Audiology (CKX51)

The MSc Audiology is a two year, full-time programme designed to qualify students to practice the profession of audiology. The aim of the programme is to educate, train and inspire confident clinicians who can meet the challenges of providing an integrated, sophisticated and scientific approach to assessing and managing the needs of children and adults with hearing and balance disorders.

This innovative programme is the first of its kind in Ireland and represents a unique opportunity to develop the profession of audiology and thus bridge the gap between service needs and service provision.

The programme is full-time over three semesters per year over the two years. Students will attend a mix of lectures and Problem Based Learning (PBL) tutorials where students apply knowledge in a sophisticated way to solve real-life problems efficiently.

Students need to engage in approximately 1000 hours of supervised clinical practice to meet professional requirements. Students may need to travel and/or arrange short-term accommodation near the placement sites and students will incur the costs of travel to clinical locations as well as the costs of accommodation

Collaboration with South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital

The masters degree in audiology has a close collaborative relationship with the tertiary referral regional Department of Otolaryngology and Audiology in the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital.

As well as clinical placements, students will have clinical teaching and lecturing from the Chief Clinical Audiologist in the Hospital, the Chief Physiotherapist and expert in Vestibular Rehabilitation along with a Consultant Otological Surgeon. Students will attend Vestibular Clinics and will have access to the Vestibular Function Lab. Training in microscopic examination and toilet of the ear will also be made available.

Students on this course will be offered a unique opportunity to attend the Outpatient department in Otology and see at first hand diseases of the ear in the acute and chronic setting.  As Clinical Specialists in Training, students will also be invited to attend live operating sessions which will enhance their understanding of common otological procedures and further broaden their knowledge of specific diseases of the external, middle and inner ear.
