On Tuesday the 23rd of November, the UCC Biochemistry & Biotechnology Society hosted the MSc Biotechnology Master’s Seminar.

The course director, Professor Tommie McCarthy spoke first. He began with how the course is ran, the prominence of biotechnology and bio pharmacy in the Munster region, and examples of companies in which past students obtained work placement. He went on to explain the modules which are taught in the programme, the project aspect of the degree and mentioned what some of the past projects entailed. Professor McCarthy finished with explaining the application process and possible career paths following the completion of the master’s degree.

The next speaker was Maeve O’Sullivan, a graduate of the BSc Biochemistry and MSc Biotechnology programmes at UCC. She is now an associate scientist in the biotherapeutics development and supply (BTDS) department in Janssen Pharmaceuticals in Ringaskiddy. Maeve began with why she decided to do the master’s and went through some of her favourite aspects of the programme, and how her work placement ran during a global pandemic. She then went on to explain her roles as an associate scientist and what her day-to-day schedule usually looks like. Maeve ended with some valuable advice and the importance of online presence when it comes to networking.

The final speaker of the evening was John Downey. John is a BSc Biochemistry graduate who is also an ambassador for the Royal Society of Biology. John first spoke on the history of the society followed by the roles of the society. He then went on to explain the benefits of being a member and how to apply.

The seminar was very informative and gave students a first-hand insight into the master’s programme and where it can lead you in the future.
