UNEP Report 2023 published

19 Jan 2024

The 2023 Report from UNEP EEAP is now published online.

This latest report is an update assessment, which this year has focused on "Plastics in the environment in the context of UV radiation, climate change and the Montreal Protocol". The report will be officially presented to governments around the world.

Solar ultraviolet radiation is a contributing factor in the environmental fate of toxic chemicals and other contaminants, with consequences that may be either beneficial or detrimental for the health of humans and the environment. This Assessment Update (2023) by the Environmental Effects Assessment Panel (EEAP) focuses on the role and significance of UV radiation and associated drivers on the breakdown of plastic waste in the environment.

The report is collaboratively drafted by 44 scientists from 17 countries, with Professor Marcel Jansen (School of Biological Earth and Environmental Sciences, UCC) as lead author.

We congratulate the team on their achievement in producing the comprehensive report.
