UV4Plants conference in Göttingen

22 Mar 2024

The last few days saw the members of the UV4Plants Association gather in Göttingen, Germany for the 5th Network Meeting of the UV4Plants Association.

Natalie Cunningham, a PhD researcher from Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at UCC in Cork, presented her work on the effects of UV-B on the morphology of plants.

Professor Marcel Jansen presented his work on "Plants, plastics and UV-B". He explained how UV-mediated breakdown of plastics are having an unexpected yet important impact on plants.

More information on the UV-Sintec project at University College Cork, that informed some of this work, can be found at our HOME pagePROJECT page.

The work on the effects of UV on pastics and their impact on the environment is part of Marcel Jansen's work with UNEP's Environmental Effects Assessment Panel (EEAP) (Ozone Secretariat). It has been published as a report "EEAP Update Assessment 2023: Plastics in the environment in the context of UV radiation, climate change and the Montreal Protocol", which can be downloaded from the Ozone Secretariat's website: https://ozone.unep.org/science/assessment/eeap

The report has also been published as an open acces publication in the journal Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences: "Plastics in the environment in the context of UV radiation, climate change and the Montreal Protocol: UNEP EEAP Update 2023", which can be found at: https://doi.org/10.1007/s43630-024-00552-3
