Visualising Climate Change: A Graphic Novel Launch - 2 June 2026 @ 4pm

It's a pleasure to invite you to celebrate the launch of Chasing the Curlew's Call / Ar Lorg Ghlao an Chrotaigh, a graphic novel exploring new approaches to climate communication through storytelling. The work brings together climate science, ecological research, visual storytelling, and participatory design to develop new ways of conveying climate change and its real-world ripple effects.

The event will feature an introduction from UCC President, Professor John O'Halloran, followed by a performance of the work in English and Irish. It will include a process exhibition teaching how the novel was designed – from co-creation workshops, to narrative and visual development, to Irish translation. We will have insights from Met Éireann on their support for this climate storytelling project, and an arts-science panel discussion with the creators.

The launch will also feature the release of a new educational resource designed to support teaching climate change and sustainability through storytelling, alongside early youth responses and their artistic creations inspired by the project.

Please do come along to the Aula Maxima on Tuesday, 2 June, 4–6pm, to celebrate the work. Everybody is welcome.

Quote from Dr David Donoghue, Former UN Irish Ambassador and Co-Founder of the SDGs on this work:

"Beautifully imagined; very moving; gripping text which is matched by wonderful artwork... As a one-time birdwatcher, I had no idea that curlews are now so endangered. This really brings home to me the challenges posed to biodiversity.”
