Research Thesis Examination

Thesis Submission & Examination

To submit a thesis, students of research programmes should follow the instructions below:

1. Ensure that your registration and fee payments are up to date.

2. Check your soft-bound submission deadline here.

3. Complete the online Intention to Submit Form, at least three months prior to the proposed date of thesis submission. You should be in close communication with your Supervisor(s) regarding your submission timeline, and in ensuring adequate time is allowed for feedback and redrafting ahead of final submission. The Graduate Studies Office will then liaise with your Department to confirm the External and Internal Examiners for your examination.

4. A soft-bound copy must be submitted for each Examiner to the Graduate Studies Office, using the guidelines for layout and binding along with a completed Submission for Examination Form.

You (or your nominee) may submit two copies of your soft bound thesis and your submission form (signed by you, your Supervisors and Head of Department/School) to the Graduate Studies Office, the 2nd Floor, West Wing, Main Quad, in the mornings Monday to Friday from 9.30am – 12.30pm, except Thursday from 10.30am – 12.30pm.

5. For PhD students, your supervisor will then arrange the Viva Voce examination and will communicate the details to you.

6. After the examination, the Examiners will return an Examiners Report to the Graduate Studies Office, giving one of the following recommendations:

  • Award, no amendments needed
  • Award, on condition minor amendments are carried out
  • Award, on condition major amendments are carried out
  • Reject, but permit submission of a revised thesis
  • Reject, but allow the award of a lower degree
  • Reject

The Examiners Report is then submitted by the Graduate Studies Office to the Academic Council Graduate Studies Committee for formal approval. Once approved, the Graduate Studies Office will notify you by email of the recommendation.

7. If you receive a recomendation of Award on condition of minor or major amendments, you should liaise with your Internal Examiner and Supervisor regarding completion of the amendments.

8. Check your hard-bound submission deadline and plan ahead for your submission.

9. Once you have received a recommendation of “Award” or “Award on condition minor amendments are carried out”, you must then submit your final thesis:
