Cara Levey Memorial PhD Scholarship in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies

The Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, University College Cork, is pleased to invite applications for the Cara Levey Memorial Scholarship, to be taken up from 1 July 2025.
The Cara Levey Memorial Scholarship will be awarded biennially on the basis of academic excellence to a deserving candidate proposing to conduct, or already conducting, PhD research in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies under the supervision of a member of the Department.
Applications in any of the specialist areas* covered by the Department are welcome, as are projects with a comparative, interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary dimension:
Preference may be given to proposals connected to the following areas:
§ Cultural production, human rights and activism
§ Memory Studies
§ Migration and mobility
§ Translation

The total value of the scholarship will be €21,840 per year, to cover EU registration fees for a full-time PhD in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies (€5,840) and a stipend (€16,000), divided into 12 monthly payments.
Full-time dedication to the research project is required. The scholarship will be tenable for up to three years, subject to an annual performance review. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute up to 6 hours per week in term-time of small-group language classes or tutorials, and to actively participate in the academic life of the institution, as well as in dissemination activities.
The Cara Levey Memorial Scholarship was established in 2025, in remembrance and recognition of Dr Cara Levey’s outstanding contribution to the academic community.
Applicants are advised to identify a potential supervisor and to discuss their project proposal with a member of staff in the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies before applying.
The deadline for applications is Friday, 2nd May 2025.
