An opportunity exists in the School of Public Health for an MPH candidate to undertake research into heart failure in people with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) under the supervision of Professor Patricia Kearney, Professor Colin Bradley, Dr. Claire Buckley and Dr. Diarmuid Quinlan.

Project Outline

Research has shown that about 20-30% of people with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) have Heart Failure (HF), often undiagnosed. An opportunity exists to identify the incidence of HF, the barriers and enablers to diagnosis and management and the value of ECHO for this cohort. Three GP Practices in Glanmire, with approx. 650 people with T2DM, will participate. The GPs will conduct a BNP blood test with routine diabetes bloods. The CNS in Heart Failure in Mallow will collaborate as the secondary care component of a HF in T2DM initiative, providing clinical support and education for GPs & patients. The Irish Heart Foundation will provide PPI to the study.


Applicants should have a good primary degree in an appropriate discipline, e.g. Public Health Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Biological Sciences.  

Studentship Details

The Studentship will start as soon as possible after September 1st 2021.

The Studentship funding covers Master of Public Health University fees for the year.
