BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition winners 2023 visit UCC

UCC recently played host to the winners of the 59th BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition (BTYSE). The BTYSE is one of the world’s longest running science exhibitions for young people and UCC President Professor John O’Halloran has been a judge for the event since 2000.
The sixth-year students, Shane O’Connor and Liam Carew, from Abbey School, Tipperary, achieved success with their project Assessing the impact of second-level education on key aspects of adolescents’ life and development. The pair spent the past three years surveying 2,500 second-level students and 250 teachers across Ireland to assess the impact of secondary school on the social, mental and physical health of adolescents, with a strong emphasis on the importance of physical activity for overall wellbeing.
The winning duo, accompanied by their science teacher Niamh McCarthy and family members (pictured above), were welcomed to the President’s Office on 27 February and presented with UCC hoodies. They discussed possibilities in higher education with the President and were informed of scholarships available for BTYSE winners for their first year in UCC – more info here.
