Donation of The Book of Lismore to UCC
The vellum manuscript known as The Book of Lismore (Leabhar Meic Carthaigh Riabhaigh) created at Kilbrittain, Co. Cork, for Finghin Mac Cartaigh, Lord of Carbery (1478 - 1505) is rightly regarded as one of the Great Books of Ireland.
For over two centuries, The Book of Lismore was cared for by the Cavendish family, Dukes of Devonshire, in Lismore and later in Chatsworth. During this period, the family at all times facilitated access to the manuscript by scholars.
Thanks to the generosity of the Duke of Devonshire, his family, and the Trustees of the Chatsworth Settlement, The Book of Lismore has been gifted to UCC by the Trustees, becoming one of the most distinguished treasures of the UCC library collection.
I am extremely proud to welcome The Book of Lismore to UCC and to applaud and thank all of those involved in working together to facilitate this remarkable addition to our library's research collection; and I am pleased that staff and students both current and future will benefit hugely from its presence here.
