17 Oct 2014

Monday, October 20th – 6:30 pm - Kane G02

The Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies is delighted to present the third of a series of Portuguese films on the theme of "journeys and returns in/to Portugal”:

ECCENTRICITIES OF A BLONDE-HAIRED GIRL

(SINGULARIDADES DE UMA RAPARIGA LOURA)

Manoel de Oliveira, 2009 (64 minutes)

Language: Portuguese (English subtitles)

"Our memory is fundamental.

History is memory, the past is memory.

When you come down to it, everything is memory."

Manoel de Oliveira

Singularidades de uma Rapariga Loura is the director´s adaptation of a story by Portuguese novelist Eça de Queiróz. Opening on a train, where a visibly distraught man, Macário, begins to unburden himself to the woman in the seat next to him, the film tells the story of Macário's infatuation with a young blond woman he spies through an apartment window…

Born in 1908, Manoel de Oliveira is the oldest active film director in the world, and also the only filmmaker whose active career has spanned from the silent era to the digital age. This alone does not add much to this film, but the fact that it reveals that the director´s passion for the medium remains as much alive now, as it was at the beginning of his career, probably does.

All films included in the series will showcase themes, directors and productions relevant to the Portuguese context and, when necessary, will include subtitles.

This initiative is free of charge and enjoys the support of the Instituto Camões and the Portuguese Embassy in Dublin.

With thanks to those who have already attended previous screenings,
