Professor Thomas Walther welcomes Dr Roisin Kelly-Laubscher to the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at UCC
Dr Roisin Kelly-Laubscher recently joined the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics and will be lecturing Pharmacology in the B.Sc. Medical and Health Sciences degree. Her research focuses on cardioprotection. More specifically it focuses on the role of Sphingolipid metabolites and the endothelial glycocalyx in ischemia-reperfusion injury.
Dr Roisin Kelly-Laubscher is a Lecturer in Pharmacology & Therapeutics. She received a BSc (Hons) in Physiology, UCC in 2003 and continued in the Department of Physiology with her doctoral studies in the laboratory of Dr HM Snow. Her PhD research focused on arterial hemodynamics, the arterial endothelium and the endothelial glycocalyx. After finishing her PhD in 2006, she moved to South Africa to take up a Postdoctoral position at the Hatter Institute for Cardiovascular Research at the University of Cape Town (UCT). She spent 3 years working at the Hatter Institute under the guidance of Prof. Lionel H Opie and Ass. Prof. Sandrine Lecour. From August 2009 to February 2018, she was appointed as a Lecturer (and later promoted to Senior lecturer) at UCT. While there her research focused on myocardial infarction, ischemia reperfusion injury and cardioprotection, and more recently the role of the endothelial glycocalyx in cardioprotection.
