The Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics at University College Cork, Ireland, is excited to announce a funded MSc opportunity for aspiring researchers. This opportunity, made possible through a partnership with the Little Princess Trust and the Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) Charity Research Network, aims to explore innovative ways to protect young hearts from drug-induced cardiotoxicity, a growing concern in pediatric cancer treatment.

Project title: Protecting young hearts from drug induced cardiotoxicity

More children are surviving cancer. As cancer survivors now live longer, the long-term detrimental effects of anti-cancer drugs, particularly doxorubicin (Adriamycin), appear more frequently. When no alternatives are available, the choice lies between using doxorubicin which may damage the heart, or no drug treatment at all. The latter is not an option. Another solution, however, is using a second drug at the same time as doxorubicin to protect the heart. Only one such drug, dexrazoxane, has been approved for this purpose; however, its use in children is controversial. Therefore, there is a need for more drugs that can minimise the heart- damaging effects of doxorubicin. This study will determine whether giving ethanolamine before doxorubicin treatment can protect the heart.

This research is funded by the Little Princess Trust in partnership with Childrens Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG) through the CCLG Charity Research Network.
