Dr. Cathal McCarthy Presents at International Congress of Diabetes and Metabolism in Seoul

Dr. Cathal McCarthy, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, was recently invited to speak at the International Congress of Diabetes and Metabolism, hosted by the Korean Diabetes Association in Seoul. The congress, which focused on the theme “Glocalization in Diabetes Care: Act Locally, Solve It Globally,” aimed to tackle local diabetes challenges with innovative global solutions.
The conference showcased the latest advancements in clinical and basic science research in the field of diabetes. Dr. McCarthy's presentation, titled “Evidence of Defective Visceral Adipose Tissue Adaptation in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus,” delved into the critical role of visceral adiposity in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). In his insightful talk, he provided a comprehensive overview of how defective visceral adipose tissue adaptation contributes to disruptions in insulin signaling, ultimately hindering maternal metabolic health.
This significant research was supported by the Health Research Board’s Emerging Investigator Award (HRB-EIA), underscoring the vital role of research grants in propelling scientific knowledge and innovation in healthcare.
The International Congress of Diabetes and Metabolism serves as a vital platform for experts in the field to exchange ideas, foster collaboration, and develop strategies to combat diabetes globally.
