UCC Professor Elected RCPI President Designate

Professor Mary Horgan, Dean of School of Medicine, UCC will succeed Professor Frank Murray as President of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) in October 2017.

Announcing Prof Horgan’s election as President Designate, RCPI President, Prof Murray said: “I want to warmly congratulate Mary on her election. Mary has made an enormous contribution to the College since she first became involved in 1999. She is a member of our Council and is currently Director of Development and Planning.

 

“Within the College Mary has a strong track record in supporting medical training initiatives, and while serving as Associate Dean of Basic Speciality Training, took a lead role in the development and training of post graduate doctors. Over the next nine months, I look forward to working closely with Mary in her new role as President Designate and I know she will bring great energy and passion to this role and laterally to her Presidency.

“It is also a new era for RCPI with the election of the first female President Designate in its 360 year history,” Prof Murray said.

Professor Horgan is a Consultant Physician in Infectious Diseases and Internal Medicine at Cork University Hospital. She is Dean of the University College Cork School of Medicine. She will become the 142nd President of RCPI in October 2017, serving a three-year term.

Prof Horgan said: “It is a great honour to be elected as President Designate and I want to thank the Members and Fellows of this great College for their support.  I look forward to working on their behalf in the years ahead.  Ireland is recognised globally for the high quality of its medical graduates and trainees.  I am committed to ensuring that we continue to train our doctors to provide world class medical care and to provide leadership in our health service in these challenging times.” 

Originally from Kerry, Professor Horgan graduated from UCD in 1986, was awarded her MD in 1995, MRCPI in 1988 and FRCPI in 1997.  She serves on the Board of the Health Products Regulatory Authority and the Mercy University Hospital, the Governing Body of UCC, formerly a Board Member of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service and previous Chair of the Council of Deans of Medical Schools.

She is a Council Member of RCPI and is Director of Development and Planning. Prof Horgan will work with RCPI President, Prof Frank Murray in the months ahead and will take on the role of RCPI President in October 2017.
