Voices from the Stomach
APC research from John Cryan’s lab featured in a German TV documentary “Voices from the stomach” on the human microbiome and the so-called “three enterotypes”.
Professor Cryan’s research focuses on understanding how stress affects the brain and body and leads to alterations in emotion and cognition. More recently, together with APC PI Ted Dinan, his group has turned their attention to the interaction between brain, gut and microbiome, the “Brain-Gut-Microbe Axis” and how it applies to stress and immune-related disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome and obesity and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism.
The programme features an interview with Professor John F Cryan, Chair of Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, UCC and Principal Investigator at the APC. UCC postdoctoral researchers Drs Roman Stilling, Andrew Allen and Yuliya Borre also feature on the programme and show how they measure the effects of stress on cognitive performance using an experimental laboratory model known as the Trier Social Stress Test

Hitec’s Tim Förderer and crew travelled to Cork recently to film in UCC (and the English Market). It was the first time that the programme travelled to a non-German speaking country.
