A UCC team is bound for Johannesburg, South Africa this August for the final of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Global Business Challenge (GBC).

The opportunity to go head to head against 23 other international teams comes following victory over nine other colleges and business schools in the Irish final on the 8th June in Tallaght IT. This is the third time in four years that UCC has gone on to represent Ireland in the competition, which seeks to draw out and inspire future business leaders.

The UCC team is made up of Hazel Grimes, David Lane (both Accounting IV), Conor Crowley (Finance III) and Richard Quirke (Commerce IV). All four students are from Cork. Dr. Peter Cleary and Dr. Margaret Healy, Department of Accounting, Finance & Information Systems, are academic mentors to the students.

The CIMA GBC 2013, which is being held in partnership with Barclays, is an international business management competition designed to test the business management skills of participants. Teams were initially provided with a case study describing JOT, a fictional toy company. Teams were then required to analyse this in advance, conduct research into the general business context in which the case is set and respond to a number of events facing JOT. Teams then delivered a 20 minute presentation of their analysis and recommendations, and participated in a question and answer session with the adjudicating panel. The global final follows a similar format.

The UCC team will represent Ireland at the global finals in Johannesburg, South Africa on Aug 28th/29th where they will compete against other teams from as far afield as Australia, China, Malaysia, Russia, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa, New Zealand and the UK.
