UCC students raise record €42,000

3 May 2013

€42,000 has been raised for charity by the UCC Students’ Union (SU), with the Irish Guidedogs, Barretstown and Cork Penny Dinners all benefiting equally.

The money was generated during the annual Raise and Give Week, which took place on the 11th of February this year.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony in UCC, SU President Eoghan Healy commented that the figure was the highest raised by any college in the country and also far higher than any previous UCC record, which was set in 2007. He also reflected on the fact that Gardaí had praised UCC students for their behaviour this year during Raise and Give Week and that a local residents spokesperson said it had been a vast improvement on recent years.

There was far more of an emphasis placed on the charity aspect of Raise and Give Week this year”, said Healy. “That was evident from the large sum of money raised and also the massive reduction in anti-social behaviour. The levels that some students went to for charities was applaudable!

Highlights of UCC’s Raise and Give Week this year included visually impaired student Dara Kennedy abseiling off the Kane building in UCC, and another student winning the use of a car for a year after touching it for 46 hours. There were various fundraising activities happening both on and off campus for the entire week with a notable presence from charity on campus for the week.

The SU initially planned to sponsor one guidedog, Ube, with the funds raised but ended up raising enough money to sponsor three.

Anne Burns, fundraising administrator for the Guidedogs said: “The money will significantly change the lives of families who use our service forever. This really is a massive donation for us and we are very grateful to the students of UCC”.
