UCC was a top performer at the recent NUI Awards Ceremony 2013, with 33% of all awards going to UCC students. The Languages and Medical fields did particularly well.

The Chancellor of the National University of Ireland Dr Maurice Manning, presented NUI Scholarships and Awards valued in the region of €800,000 to students and graduates of NUI institutions at the ceremony held earlier in November.

Some of the highest achieving students from across the NUI’s constituent universities and recognised colleges competed for awards in a wide range of disciplines. The award winners include representatives from UCC, UCD, NUI Maynooth, NUI Galway, RCSI, St. Angela’s College and NCAD.

Interim Vice-President for Teaching & Learning, Dr Bettie Higgs, said “It was great to see such talent represented at the NUI Awards ceremony. UCC is very proud of these and all of our students.”

Funding for eleven major PhD studies was awarded through the NUI Travelling Studentships. These PhD studies will undertake important research in Ophthalmology, Biomedical Engineering, Music and History.

Speaking at the event, Dr Manning emphasised the importance of supporting and investing in academic excellence.

“We are pleased to be able to provide these scholarships and awards to encourage, support and reward students in all of our constituent bodies in the pursuit of new knowledge and forms of expression  – not simply for their own sake, but ultimately so that their innovations can benefit our culture, our economy, and our citizens."
