All are welcome to attend this free public lecture, which begins at 5.30pm in Boole Lecture Theatre 1 on Friday 22 March.

Professor Louise Richardson, a leading authority on terrorism and political violence, is to deliver a public lecture at UCC this Friday 22 March.

‘Terrorism: What have we learnt?’ comes as part of the Centre for Global Development (CGD) Global Challenges Lecture Series. Professor Richardson, a native of Tramore, Waterford and graduate of Trinity College Dublin, is Professor of International Relations and Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of St Andrews, Scotland’s oldest university. Her lecture at UCC will explore the lessons learnt since the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and will investigate the illusions around terrorists and counter-terrorists. It will discuss what has been learnt about the threat terrorism poses, and explore the potential causes of terrorism, the motives of terrorists and the effectiveness of various counter-terrorism tactics and strategies. It will also discuss the merits of a more rational, less costly, and more focused counter-terrorism strategy of containment into the future.

A political scientist by training, Professor Richardson has specialised in international security with an emphasis on terrorist movements. Her publications include, Democracy and Counterterrorism: Lessons from the Past (2007), What Terrorists Want: Understanding the Enemy, Containing the Threat (2006), The Roots of Terrorism (2006), and When Allies Differ (1996). She has written numerous articles on international terrorism, British foreign and defense policy, security institutions, and international relations. She serves on the editorial boards of a number of academic journals and publications related to security studies. Professor Richardson has been awarded the Sumner Prize for work towards the prevention of war and the establishment of universal peace. In 2010, she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 2011, she was appointed to the Scottish Government’s Council of Economic Advisers.

Professor Patrick Fitzpatrick, Director of the CGD, comments: “Professor Louise Richardson’s public lecture, as part of the CGD Global Challenges Lecture Series, provides another valuable opportunity for the University and the wider community to consider a theme of significance to us all as citizens at local, regional and international levels”.

Previous speakers on the Series have included Dr Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland, as well as Professor Robert Gallo, co-discover of the HIV/AIDS virus among others.

A podcast of this talk will be available to download from the CGD website (http://www.ucc.ie/cgd/) following the lecture. This talk will also be broadcast by UCC 98.3FM Radio.
