Tánaiste delivers lecture at UCC Law Faculty

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore outlined a wide range of priorities to be addressed during Ireland’s Presidency of the EU Council at a lecture held recently at UCC.
The Tánaiste & Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Eamon Gilmore T.D. was welcomed to UCC by Professor Caroline Fennell, deputising for the President of UCC, Professor Ursula Kilkelly, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Declan Walsh, lecturer in European Union law. The lecture was chaired by Mr. Justice Bryan McMahon.
In the course of his lecture, the Tánaiste outlined a wide range of priorities during the Irish presidency and discussed the logistical arrangements involved in hosting the Presidency. He spoke at length about the role of the European Union in a global context, especially in the context of trade negotiations.
Following the lecture there was a lively question and answer session in which students raised issues ranging from the ongoing conflict in Syria to finding an EU-wide solution to youth unemployment.
The Faculty of Law has a long tradition of scholarship in the field of European Union law, dating back over the forty years of Irish membership of the EU. It has hosted many events relating to EU law and has particular research strengths in the fields of EU environmental law and EU Competition law and policy.
