In a showdown to rival the epic Rocky v Apollo clash, UCC Students’ Union President Padraig Haughney will discover if he can go the distance with Boxing Olympian Kenny Egan on 12 November.

There will be no Adrian Balboa cheering them on this time around though, but rather two deserving charities. Breakthrough Cancer Research and the Children’s Unit at Cork University Hospital will benefit from the fundraising night at the Savoy, Cork on 12 November at 7pm, which hopes to raise 20,000 euro. The ten euro ticket price pulls no punches when you consider 14 other fights with a difference are also on the ticket. Bragging rights are up for grabs, as UCC students take on UCC staff in the charity fight night of the year.

Organised by the UCCSU and UCC Clubs Executive and supported by the Savoy, Cork spectators will surely want a seat ringside to truly relish the bout of the century as UCCSU’s ‘Podge’ from Bishopstown takes on the Clondalkin native Egan. A veteran champion boxer and Olympic Silver Medal holder courtesy of the Light-Heavyweight boxing final in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Egan has come out of retirement to accept Haughney’s challenge.

UCC staff and student boxers are now being actively recruited, subject to a health check, with six weeks of training provided by UCC Boxing Club on offer to help fighters prepare (they promise, no punching of meat required unlike poor Rocky). Participants are asked to raise 250 euro in sponsorship.

All funds raised in the event will be split evenly between the charities. Businesses can also get in on the action, with opportunities to sponsor the boxers themselves, as well as ring cards and ring side advertising. Interested companies and potential fighters should contact president@uccsu.ie
